INTRODUCTION

 

A couple of years ago my granddaughter asked if I would visit her social Studies class during Veterans Week and speak.  I agreed and contacted her teacher.  After speaking with the 6^th grade teacher, she requested I provide her with an overview of my military background and family history.  That was the initial step to begin documenting not only my military background but to also investigate my family’s history.

 

The following information is my attempt to document the Lowrance Family military history and in some small way to honor and remember those Lowrance family members, who have proudly served their country and cause, made personal sacrifices, and contributed to the Lowrance legacy. 

 

I believe those listed within this document are most probably descendants of Johannes Lorentz Lowrance and Anna Margaretha Heilger Lowrance who settled in New Jersey around 1710. 

While this document does not attempt to link each military member directly to the original settler Johannes Lorentz Lowrance, it does attempt to put into one document those with the last name Lowrance who have served in the military for future generations to view, investigate, and reflect on as a key part of their heritage.

 

I would like to thank each person who has contributed to this document.  Without your assistance I would not have been able to collect all the Lowrance names listed.  I will continue to investigate, update and solicit assistance.  As I have updates, I will ensure a new version is sent in a timely manner.  Additionally, I will keep my website, http://www.k4sx.com updated with the same information and other family data.

ALABAMA

 

1^ST Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi Infantry Regiment

• Organized in December of 1861
• Composed of four Alabama, four Tennessee, and two Mississippi companies
• After April 1862 the units merged into 42^nd Tennessee Regiment and for a short time was known as the 4^th Confederate Regiment

 

 

ARKANSAS

 

Cocke’s Regiment

• Named after Col. John B. Cocke
• Organized in June 1862 and also known as the 39^th Regiment
• Not much information is known about this unit

 

18^th Infantry Regiment

• Also called Carroll’s-Daly’s-Crockett’s Regiment
• Organized at Devall’s Bluff, Arkansas in the summer of 1861
• The unit of about 1000 men moved to Fort Pillow, Tennessee and was decimated by disease
• The unit was ordered to Corinth, Mississippi and its strength due to disease went down to 424 men.  During the fight at Corinth they lost an additional 118 men.
• Later the unit became part of Beall’s Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.  In April of 1863 the unit united with Power’s 14^th and Lyle’s 23^rd Arkansas Regiments.
• The unit was captured at Port Hudson.  It later was exchanged, re-organized, mounted, and attached to General Dockery’s Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Dept.

 

19^th Infantry Regiment

• Known as Smead’s-Dockery’s Regiment
• Organized at Devall’s Bluff, Arkansas in April 1861 and moved to Memphis
• Fought in the battles of Corinth and Hatchie Bridge
• Later captured at Vicksburg in July of 1863
• After being exchanged, the regiment was reorganized and mounted and placed in Dockery’s and Roane’s Brigade

 

 

25^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized in the summer of 1861 using the 11^th Arkansas Battalion as it nucleus
• Later assigned to McNair’s and D. H. Reynold’s Brigade, Army of Tennessee
• Later consolidated with the 31^st Arkansas Regiment and fought at Murfreesboro, Jackson, and then participated in campaigns of the army from Chickamauga to Bentonville.

 

30th Infantry Regiment

• Also called the 5^th Trans-Mississippi Regiment or 39^th Regiment after 1863
• Organized the summer of 1862
• Served in McRae’s and Roane’s Brigade and fought at Prairie Grove and Helena
• Later this unit was re-organized, mounted, and moved with General Price to Missouri

• Organized in January 1863 and the successor to McRae’s 28^th Regiment

• Saw action at New Bern, Fredericksburg, Stuart’s raid into Pennsylvania, Brandy Station, Upperville, Hanover, Gettysburg, Todd’s Tavern, Hanover Court House, Haw’s Tavern, Black’s and White’s Wilson’s Farm, Hampton’s Cattle Raid, and Five Forks

3^rd Infantry Regiment State Troops

• Organized at Garysburg, North Carolina in May of 1861
• Attached to General Ripley’s, Colston’s, Steuart’s, and Cox’s Brigades
• Fought from Seven Day’s Battles to Shenandoah Valley to Appomattox

 

4^th Infantry Regiment (State Troops)

• Organized in May of 1862 at Camp Hill near Garysburg, North Carolina
• Served in General Featherston’s, G. B. Anderson’s, Ramseur’s, and Cox’s Brigades
• Fought at Williamsburg, Seven Pines, seven Day’s Battles, South Mountain to Cold Harbor
• Later was involved in the Shenandoah Valley operations and Appomattox Campaigns

 

5^th Infantry Regiment (Senior Reserves)

• Organized at Halifax North Carolina in July of 1861
• The unit was ordered to Virginia and fought in the battle under General Longstreet
• Later it was under the commands of Generals Early, Garland, Iverson, and R. D. Johnson
• Participated in campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Williamsburg to Cold Harbor and then at Shenandoah Valley and Appomattox

 

7^th Infantry Regiment (State Troops)

• Organized at Camp Mason near Graham North Carolina in August of 1861
• Assigned to General Branch’s, Law’s, and Lane’s Brigades, Army of Northern Virginia
• Participated in various campaigns that included the Seven Day’s Battles to Cold Harbor
• Surrendered with the Army of Tennessee in 1865

 

12^th Infantry Regiment

• Formerly known as the 2^nd Volunteers
• Organized near Garysburg North Carolina in May of 1861
• Served in General Garland’s, Iverson’s, and R. D. Johnson’s Brigades, Army of Northern Virginia
• Participated in conflicts from the Seven Day’s Battles to Cold Harbor, and saw action in the Shenandoah operations.  Ended the War at Appomattox

 

32^nd Infantry Regiment

• Organized at Drewry’s Bluff, Virginia in April 1862
• Used the 1^st Carolina Infantry Battalion as its nucleus
• Assigned to General Daniel’s and Grimes Brigades
• Fought in Shenandoah Valley, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, and ended the war at Appomattox

 

34^th Infantry Regiment

• Col. William Lee J. Lowrance was one of the commanders
• Assembled at High Point, North Carolina in October of 1861
• Sent to Virginia and was assigned to General Pender’s and Scales’ Brigades
• This unit was active in campaigns from the Seven Days’ Battles to Cold Harbor and participated in the Petersburg siege south of the James River, Fredericksburg, and operations in the vicinity of Appomattox.
• Fought at Gettysburg Where Col. Lowrance took command of Scales’ Brigade during the engagement

 

37^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized by Col. C. C. Lee at High Point North Carolina in November 1861
• Fought at New Bern and then was moved to Virginia in the spring of 1862
• Assigned to General Branch’s and Lane’s Brigades, Army of Northern Virginia
• Fought at Hanover Court house, Seven Day’s Battles, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Appomattox

 

38^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized at Camp Mangum near Raleigh in January 1862
• Assigned to General Pender’s and Scales’ Brigades
• Fought in many conflicts from Seven Day’s Battles to Cold Harbor

 

42^nd Infantry Regiment

• Organized in Salisbury, North Carolina in April 1862
• In June the unit moved to Lynchburg Virginia and guarded prisoners captured in Jackson’s Valley Campaign
• The unit later served in North Carolina
• Assigned to General Martin’s and Kirkland’s Brigade
• Fought at Cold Harbor and Petersburg and ended the War in Tennessee

 

46^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized in March of 1862 at Camp Mangum near Raleigh
• Served in General Walker’s and Cooke’s Brigades
• Fought in battles from the Seven Days’ Battles to Fredericksburg
• Later sent to Pocataligo South Carolina
• Then sent to Virginia to fight at Bristoe, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor
• Ended the War at Appomattox

49^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized in March of 1862 at Garysburg, North Carolina
• Assigned to General R. Ransom’s and M. W. Ransom’s Brigades
• Unit fought with the Army of Northern Virginia
• Saw action at Seven Battles, Fredericksburg, Petersburg trenches, and Appomattox

 

54^th Infantry Regiment

• Assembled at Camp Mangum near Raleigh in May of 1862
• Assigned to General Law’s, Hoke’s, Godwin’s, and W. G. Lewis’ Brigades, Army of Northern Virginia
• Fought at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville and guarded prisoners during the Pennsylvania Campaign
• Took part at Bristoe and Mine Run, Shenandoah Valley, and Appomattox Campaigns

 

56^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized in July of 1862 at Camp Mangum near Raleigh North Carolina
• Served as a Recon unit between Goldsboro, Wilmington, and Tarboro
• Served on the Blackwater
• Attached to M. W. Ranson’s Brigade and fought at Camp Swamp, Plymouth, and Drewry’s Bluff.  Also was engaged at Petersburg trenches and saw action at Appomattox

 

57^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized at Salisbury, north Carolina in July 1862
• Assigned to General Law’s, Hoke’s, Godwin’s, and W. G. Lewis’ Brigades
• Fought at Vicksburg to Mine Run and then returned to North Carolina
• Continued to fight at Drewry’s Bluff and Cold Harbor and in the early Shenandoah operations and around Appomattox

 

58^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized in Mitchell County North Carolina in July of 1862 with 12 Companies
• Assigned during the War to Kelley’s, Reynold’s, Brown’s, Reynold’s Consolidated, and Palmer’s Brigades
• Participated with the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Atlanta, and guarded prisoners at Columbia Tennessee during Hood’s operations
• Later moved to South Carolina and saw action at Bentonville

 

 

60^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized in Greenville, Tennessee during the summer of 1862 by adding 4 companies to the 6^th North Carolina State Infantry Battalion
• Fought at the Battle of Chickamauga, Murfreesboro, and Bentonville

 

Thomas’ Legion

• Also called Thomas’ Legion of Indians and Highlanders or 69^th Regiment)
• Organized at Knoxville, Tennessee in September 1862 by Col. W. H. Thomas
• Comprised of Infantry Regiment and a Calvary Battalion
• Skirmished in East Tennessee and during May of 1864 and moved to Virginia
• Participated in early Shenandoah Valley operations and then returned to North Carolina
• Active at Soco Gap, Mill Creek and surrendered at Waynesville on May 10, 1864

 

 

TENNESSEE

 

8^th Cavalry Regiment (Baxter Smith’s)

• Usually called the 4^th Regiment, organized in November of 1862 but annulled
• Reorganized in January of 1863 by consolidating Davis’ Tennessee Cavalry Battalion and 4 companies from Murray’s Cavalry Regiment
• Served in Wharton’s. Biffle’s, and T. Harrison’s Brigade
• Fought at Chickamauga, Atlanta Campaign, and Carolinas Campaigns

 

9^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized at Jackson Tennessee in May of 1861
• Fought at Shiloh and Perryville before being assigned to General Maney’s and Palmer’s Brigades, Army of Tennessee
• In December of 1862 it was consolidated into the 6^th Tennessee Regiment
• Participated in campaigns from Murfreesboro to Atlanta
• Ended the War in North Carolina

 

12^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized in Corinth Mississippi in June of 1861 and then moved to Virginia
• Fought under D. R. Jones at First Manassas
• Remainder of the war fought under Generals H. Cobb, Griffith, Barksdale, and Humphreys
• Also fought at Leesburg and later from Seven Pines to Cold Harbor to Shenandoah Valley and Appomattox Campaign

 

 

17^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized at Camp Trousdale in Summer County Tennessee in June of 1861
• Served at Cumberland Gap and then in Kentucky at Rock Castle and Fishing Creek
• Later the unit was ordered to Mississippi and assigned to A. T. Hawthorn’s Brigade
• Returned to Kentucky and assigned to B. R. Johnson’s Brigade and fought at Perryville
• Also fought at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga
• Later consolidated with the 23^rd Regiment

 

22^nd Infantry Regiment (Freeman’s)

• Organized at Camp Trenton in August of 1861
• Served under Cheatam’s, R. M. Russell’s, and B. R. Johnson’s Brigades
• Saw action at Belmont and Shiloh
• Merged into the 12^th Regiment in June of 1862

 

22^nd Cavalry Regiment (Barteau’s)

• Often called the 2^nd Regiment, organized in June of 1862 by consolidating the 1^st and 7^th Tennessee Cavalry Regiments
• Assigned to Ferguson’s and T. H. Bell’s Brigades and served in Northern Mississippi
• Active at Luka, Corinth, Brice’s Cross Roads, Fort Pillow, and Harrisburg
• In February of 1865 was consolidated with Wilson’s 21^st Cavalry Regiment

 

47^th Infantry Regiment

• Organized in December of 1861 at Camp Trenton, Gibson County, Tennessee
• Involved at Shiloh and Richmond
• Later assigned to P. Smith’s, Vaughn’s, and Palmer’s Brigades
• October 1862 consolidated into the 12^th Regiment
• Participated in campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Murfreesboro to Atlanta and endured Hood’s winter operations in Tennessee
• Also fought at Bentonville

 

 

TEXAS

 

2^nd Cavalry Regiment

• Organized in May of 1861 under the designation of 2^nd Texas Mounted Rifles
• Reorganized in April of 1862 to the 2^nd Cavalry regiment
• Fought in the New Mexico Territory and Louisiana and saw action in the defense of Galveston

 

8^th Infantry Regiment (Hobby’s)

• Organized in the summer of 1862 by consolidating the 8^th Texas Infantry Battalion and Shea’s Artillery Battalion
• Contained 1 Cavalry unit, 4 Infantry units, and 5 Artillery companies
• Served in the Trans-Mississippi Department
• Saw action in Louisiana but primarily stayed in Texas

 

14^th Cavalry Regiment

• Organized in the winter of 1861 to 1862 and mustered into service in March
• Dismounted and sent to Mississippi, Kentucky where they saw action at Richmond
• Later assigned to General Ector’s Brigade and fought from Murfreesboro to Nashville
• In 1865 involved in the defense of Mobile

 

32^nd Regiment Cavalry (Crump’s Battalion, Mounted Volunteers)

• Also called the 15^th Regiment
• Organized in may of 1862 using the 1^st Texas Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus
• Served in Arkansas, Missouri, and Indiana Territory
• Assigned to Gano’s and J. E. Harrison’s Brigades and fought at Poison Spring and Cabin Creek
